I found my first Milieris watch 18 years ago on our honeymoon. We were driving up Arizona 89A to Sedona and stopped in Jerome. We wandered around an artsy retail shop called Sky Fire, where I stumbled onto a case of these Watchcraft time pieces.
I looked admiringly. I was slack-jawed, actually. I'd never seen anything like them. They were art: hammered and etched metal wrapped around a Citizen quartz movement behind a hand-painted watch face. Each was numbered. Each was unique. Each was like no other.
I looked at those watches, possibly with some longing. Then I looked at the rubber Timex on my wrist and told Jill I probably couldn't. She said, "You could." (The rest of that story is here: https://joejansen.blogspot.com/2013/12/patina.html)
Over the years, I've collected a few more of Edu's pieces, most of them gifts from Jill. We've traded some messages. I shared that "Patina" essay with him. I've shared pictures of his watches and bracelets here and on IG. We've traded wisecracks and compliments. I've sworn that next time I'm in Queens, I'm coming by to see where he creates, and then drag him out to share a meal or something. So we know each other a little, in that way.
Back to the bracelet Jill was ordering... After receiving her order, Edu responded by email: "Jill JANSEN? Are you, by any chance, related to my good friend and best ambassador, JOE Jansen?"
She laughed. "He's my husband! And SHHHH! Don't give away my surprise!"
One thing I love about Edu's art: on these pieces wrought in brass and copper and silver, he intentionally does not use any sealant or protective coatings on the metals. The intent is that the metals and the wearer are subject to the same weather and environments. My sweat interacts with the metal and changes it, oxidizes it. We change and age together.
Last week, I saw Edu post an Instagram picture of a new design he calls "Dunes in Brass." I gasped, and immediately went to the Comment box and typed:
"Uh-oh..."
My next stop was to his website to order one of those limited edition numbered pieces. Love this watch. Love his work.
